What is Mother’s Day and why do we celebrate?
As with many traditions and celebratory days, Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday as it is also known, began with a religious purpose. Three weeks before Easter Sunday, on the fourth Sunday of lent, the day was originally held in honour and to give thanks for the Virgin Mary.
Today, Mother’s Day is a day dedicated to showing love, gratitude and appreciation to our mothers. This is often shown by giving gifts and flowers or spending the day celebrating with a meal.
